How Often Should You Get a Cleaning?
Why twice a year is the usual advice, who may need more, and what happens at each visit.
For many people, a professional dental cleaning every six months is the standard recommendation. At Your Olathe Dentist in Olathe, the right schedule depends on your mouth, and some patients do better with more frequent visits.
Why Every Six Months Is Common
Plaque builds up on teeth every day. Brushing and flossing remove most of it, but some always gets left behind and hardens into tartar, which a toothbrush cannot remove.
A six-month schedule gives your hygienist a chance to clear that buildup before it irritates the gums, and gives your dentist a regular look at your teeth. Small problems, like an early cavity or a cracked filling, are usually simpler to treat when they are caught early. Digital X-rays, taken on the schedule your dentist recommends, help with that too.
For people with healthy gums and few cavities, twice a year is often enough to keep things that way.

When You May Need Cleanings More Often
Some patients are better served by visits every three or four months. The most common reason is a history of gum disease. Once gums pull away from the teeth, deeper pockets form that collect bacteria, and closer visits help keep that under control.
Other factors can play a role too, including diabetes, smoking, a dry mouth from medication, frequent cavities, or appliances that trap plaque. Your dentist will recommend a schedule based on what they see, and it can change over time.
What Happens at a Cleaning
Your visit starts with a quick update on your health and medications. A dental hygienist then removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gum line, polishes your teeth, and flosses between them. The hygienist also measures your gums to check for signs of gum disease.
Dr. Tony then examines your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, including an oral cancer screening, and reviews any X-rays taken that day. If he finds something that needs attention, he will explain it and talk through your options. Before you leave, you can book your next cleaning.
Between Visits
What you do at home matters just as much. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Your hygienist can suggest tools that make home care easier, such as flossing aids or a special toothpaste, so your next cleaning goes more smoothly.
What Insurance Usually Covers
Many dental plans cover two preventive cleanings and exams a year, often at little or no cost to you. Coverage depends on your individual plan, so it is worth checking your benefits. Your Olathe Dentist is in network with more than 20 plans and files claims electronically. See our insurance and payment options.
If you need cleanings more often, or a deeper cleaning for gum disease, your plan may cover those visits differently. Our front desk can help you understand your benefits before you come in.
No Insurance? You Still Have Options
If you do not have dental insurance, ask about the Premier Care Plan, an in-office plan for patients without insurance. Call the office for details. New patients can also start with the $49 new patient exam and X-rays special, and CareCredit financing is available, subject to approval.
